Leucaena is a small, fast-growing tree native to southern Mexico and Northern Central America, but is now naturalized throughout the tropics. Known as Subabul in India, it is used for a variety of purposes, such as firewood, fibre and livestock fodder.
Subabul regularly sheds leaves, providing mulch and green manure and enriching the topsoil. It is highly suitable for green-manuring and composting. Importantly, it fixes nitrogen
